A teenager who suffered 25 per cent burns when his petrol-soaked clothes caught alight continues to make progress in hospital.

Tom Ramsay, of Baynards Avenue, Little Dunmow, suffered injuries to his face, chest, hands and right leg when a lighter was ignited on January 28.

Dunmow window cleaner Barry Osborn smothered the flames and the Worth family returning from a swimming trip helped cool the 14-year-old's in-juries until emergency services arrived at waste land at the Oakwood Park housing development.

Mum Jana Ramsay said her son was in a rehabilitation ward at St Andrew's Burns Unit at Broomfield Hospital Chelmsford, and was feeling much better.

"He's much more positive. We are having a meeting with doctors to discuss when he can return home although he will have to return for skin grafts," she said.

Tom and his friends were trying to start a dumped car with a petrol-driven generator when the fuel went down his clothes and was ignited by a lighter they were using.
