A police search was launched after clothes and a mobile phone belonging to a missing man were discovered in a seafront shelter.
Frank Cattell, 53, who lives in Clacton, was last seen by his family about four weeks ago.
Concern is growing over his whereabouts and an appeal has gone out for him to contact either police or his family.
The items were found in a bag in a shelter at the Esplanade, Frinton, by a member of the public.
The Essex Police helicopter was called in and carried out a search from Clacton Pier to Walton Pier yesterday afternoon but there was no sign of the man.
Anyone with information is asked to contact police on 01255 221312.
