RON Greenwood, the man who led West Ham United to their first major honours, has died aged 84 after a long illness.

He passed away peacefully in his Suffolk home on Wednesday evening, it was announced at lunchtime.

A minute's silence will be held before Monday's home match against Birmingham City.

Greenwood took over as West Ham manager in 1961 and took them to FA Cup glory in 1964 before following it up with European Cup Winner's Cup glory after a 2-0 Wembley triumph over TSV 1860 Munich.

Greenwood was West Ham manager until 1974 before handing over to John Lyall, and he remained at the club as general manager for three more years.

Then he took over the England job and led the team to the 1980 European Championships in Italy and the 1982 World Cup finals in Spain.

Greenwood leaves a widow, Lucy, two children, five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
