A dopey thief put police on to his trail when he left his mobile phone at the amusement park he was stealing from.
James Whitlock used tape to cover up motion sensors at the Emporium in Walton when he visited on May 11, 2004, a court heard.
He went back to the venue after closing time and stole £2,000 in coins safe in the knowledge he wouldn't trigger alarms.
But when a piece of tape came unstuck, the alarms started blaring and the 20-year-old fled, leaving behind his cash haul and the phone.
Police used the mobile to trace him and he was arrested, Colchester magistrates heard. Whitlock admitted the attempted burglary yesterday.
Magistrates gave him a two-month custody sentence, to run concurrently with an existing one, meaning he will serve no extra time behind bars.
