A new supported housing scheme for teenagers leaving care has been launched in Witham.

Essex County Council and Mosaic Homes have opened the development of eight self-contained one-bedroom flats for people aged 16 and over leaving residential care homes in Braintree and the surrounding areas.

The scheme opens to tenants on Monday and provides short-term housing in a safe and supported environment as well as teaching the skills needed to live independently.

Essex County Council's leaving and aftercare service refer tenants to Mosaic, which conduct an interview and allocate places subject to suitability.

Teenagers can stay at the development for up to two years while completing education courses or finding employment.

There are also schemes in Chelmsford, Colchester, Laindon and a fifth planned for Harlow.
