The Layer Road side leapfrogged their Essex rivals thanks to a hard-earned 1-0 win over Scunthorpe United last night and extended their record to 20 wins out of their last 22 matches in the process.

Chris Iwelumo was on target in stoppage time at the end of the first half to seal the points and the towering striker is eager for the U's to maintain their position at the top.

"It's fantastic to be up there," said the Scotsman, who netted his 16th goal for the club since signing joining in the summer from German side Alemania Aachen.

He added: "We've got to be prepared to battle like we did last night.

"Teams know we are doing well and all they are wanting to do is come along and try and knock the wind out of our sails."

There was an argument that Iwelumo's goal against the Iron was far from fair. The visitors appealed that the striker had fouled defender Richard Hinds to get his head on the ball to score.
