The last two telephone exchanges in Essex without broadband are set to be switched to the high speed internet service this summer.
A deal between Essex county council and BT means around 370 households and businesses at Warren Farm in Colchester and Willingale near Colchester will be upgraded by the end of July.
After the upgrade every home and business in Essex will be connected to a ADSL (asymmetric digital subscriber line) broadband exchange.
The upgrading work is being funded by the East of England Development Agency (EEDA).
At present 29.8 per cent of homes and businesses in Essex have switched over to broadband, above the east of England's average of 27.8 per cent.
Peter McCarthy-Ward, BT's east of England regional director said: "This is fantastic news for these communities and for Essex as a whole. It is a milestone in the delivery of EEDA's and BT's objective of region-wide broadband coverage."
