For many Colchester United fans there is probably a desperate search to find any nails left on their fingers today.

The U's were given a stern test by Scunthorpe United last night and Layer Road let out a collective sigh of relief when referee Kevin Wright blew the final whistle.

Chris Iwelumo netted the only goal in the game, and thankfully it was just enough in the end to put the U's back where they belong at the top of Coca-Cola League One.

Southend United were pushed back down to second spot as the U's marched on, recording their 20th win in 22 games.

A staggering record, and one that has been built on grit and determination in the past months and last night was no different.
