Phil Parkinson was pleased with the battling performance shown by his side in their 1-0 win against Scunthorpe United.
Under pressure - Greg Halford stays close to Scunthorpe's Andy Keogh. (47694-5)
The Iron gave the U's a stern test at Layer Road last night but a single Chris Iwelumo goal sealed the three points to put the Essex side top of the Coca-Cola League One.
Parkinson said: "It was a game where we had to roll our sleeves up and dig in at times.
"There was 75 minutes of the ugly side of the game where we had to battle hard, but also some good play too.
"Scunthorpe did very well and I think Brian Laws has every right to be disappointed that his team came away with nothing.
"They kept up a very high tempo and kept pushing us back.
"It was tough and they worked hard but so did we."
