It contained cash raised for Children in Need, a digital camera and vouchers for play equipment. The raiders also swiped a computer monitor as they left Nanna's Day Nurseries in Pathfields Road, escaping with a £7,000 haul.
Distraught staff discovered the break-in when they opened up yesterday.
Keely Hogben, programme director at the nursery, said: "The staff here are all shocked and upset. We've been running the nursery for nearly ten years and nothing like this has happened before.
"Thankfully, none of the children's equipment was touched, which is a relief."
Anyone who saw suspicious activity around the nursery or knows anything about the crime should call Clacton police on 01255 221312 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
