A pensioner was pelted with stones after yobs turned their anger on the woman at a seaside play area.
The woman, who lives nearby and walks with the aid of a stick, went out to tackle the youngsters who were at the Crossways site at Jaywick.
She had watched in horror as the group of about six threw stones at defenceless ducks and moorhens in a stream that runs through the land.
The woman went across and spoke to them and asked them to stop. But instead, they started throwing stones at her - hitting her a number of times.
A resident, who did not want to be named for fear of reprisal, also approached the youngsters. The man said it was the latest in a long line of similar incidents at the site. He told how wildlife had been pelted with stones and hit with sticks over the past year or so.
