Police called off a high-speed car chase in Colchester as they feared people could be injured.

A court heard how officers were chasing a Porsche car towards the town centre on a Friday night when it was decided to back off.

Later on, one officer saw the car in High Street and stood in front of the vehicle but it drove towards him. The officer managed to get out of the way and car driver Mark Shepherd was arrested later.

The 30-year-old had led police on a high-speed chase from Sheepen Road and up North Station Road at speeds of more than 50mph.

Police chasing him called off the pursuit as Shepherd neared High Street at about 11pm on August 12 last year.

Officers were concerned that people could have been hurt if the chase had continued, Nkunde Akodolu, prosecuting, told Chelmsford Crown Court.

Shepherd, of East Hill, Colchester, was jailed for 28 weeks and banned from driving for three years after he admitted charges of dangerous driving and driving over the alcohol limit.

Peter Smith, mitigating, said Shepherd was deeply sorry for his behaviour. He had panicked when he saw the blue police lights and drove off, Mr Smith said.

He had acted totally out of character and it was unlikely he would be appearing in court again, Mr Smith added.
