Outraged parents are so sick of their children treading in dogs' muck, they have sprayed it with red hair dye.

Joanne Pinkney, 39, and Carlyn Potter, 41, said they have been driven to the action because the situation had got so bad.

The pair hope it helps children avoid the mess and sends a stern message to irresponsible dog owners that the community has had enough.

Mrs Pinkney, of Back Lane, Stisted, whose sons Thomas, nine, and George, five, attend Stisted Primary School in The Street, said: "It is getting beyond a joke.

"Every morning, there is dogs' mess everywhere. The children step in it and prams are wheeled through it - it's disgusting."

Wendy Schmitt, Braintree Council cabinet member for public protection and health living, said: "I'm sorry that the mothers have had to take this action. I admire them and hope those responsible will pick up their dogs' mess."

Colin Batchelor, principal environmental health officer, said:"We would urge people to report any problems so we can follow them up as best we can."
