A pensioner has been jailed after he was caught trying to smuggle cigarettes through Harwich.
Customs officers discovered 65,000 cigaretes in a camper van they stopped at the port last October 17.
The duty evaded by the smuggling amounted to £36,900, Chelmsford Crown Court heard yesterday.
Swedish national Leif Dahlquist, 65, of Sibbhuit in Sweden, admitted a smuggling charge when he apeared in court and was jailed for six months.
Stephen Rose, mitigating, said the cigarettes were destined for Ireland.
Dahlquist was to have been paid 5,000 Swedish crowns - about £400. He was short of money at the time, Mr Rose said.
