Lord Newton of Braintree is to head the investigation into the Buncefield oil terminal explosions.

Braintree's former MP is the independent chairman of the six-member Health and Safety Commission (HSC) board supervising the examination of the depot blasts on December 11.

Lord Newton, as Tony Newton, was elected MP for Braintree in 1974 and held the post of Secretary of State for Social Security from 1989 to 1992.
