Town centre shoppers have fallen foul of the tricksters who use hi-tech equipment to take the cash.

Marie Turner had nearly £1,500 stolen from her account after using the Royal Bank of Scotland cashpoint in Head Street.

"This all started at a bank cashpoint on Head Street on Saturday afternoon," she said.

"I have used that cash machine countless times and know what it looks like. It didn't look even the slightest bit strange or tampered with."

Many more victims from cashpoints across the town have come forward since an alert was sent out by the police and council-run community safety team. Colchester crime reduction officer Colin Stiff said: "The indication is there are a lot of unreported incidents happening. We are trying to tackle it as best we can."

A Royal Bank of Scotland spokesman said: "Unfortunately skimming is an industry-wide issue which can affect all UK bank machines. We continue to work closely with the police and Apacs (the UK payments association) to combat this crime."
