The last night of the Mercury Theatre's production of Beauty and the Beast on Saturday raised an estimated £1,000 for the Evening Gazette's Sparkle Appeal
The fundraising was organised by the Rotary Club of Colchester Centurion, with a proportion of tickets sales and money from a raffle and collection going to charity.
This year, the Evening Gazette is raising funds for sports equipment for children's homes in Essex.
Mercury chief executive Dee Evans was also presented with a Paul Harris Award by the Rotarians in recognition of her outstanding service to the community.
