Much of the discussion before the Ipswich-Sheffield United game centred on events off the pitch, rather than on it.

At the start of the week, Town confirmed that businessman Michael Anderson had bought a 15 per cent stake in the club and would be joining the board at Portman Road.

However, that scenario changed quite dramatically on Friday.

It emerged that Florida-based Anderson had previously been involved with two financially-stricken clubs, Aldershot and Kettering, in the early 1990s.

But the pharmaceutical magnate failed to mention his footballing background when he spoke to Town.

As such, when those facts were revealed in a national press column he offered not to take up his directorship.

Ipswich agreed that would be for the best, while his past dealings are reviewed.

Blues chairman David Sheepshanks said in a statement: "In order to minimise embarrassment, Michael has quite properly offered not to take up his directorship."
