Residents in east Braintree today said they were classed as the district's "poor relations" - always losing out on funding to other areas.

A childminder is outraged money from the sale of Great Bradfords community hall in east Braintree is not being spent on play equipment for the area.

She is angry east Braintree is becoming the poor relation to the rest of the district, which is benefiting from the funds.

The community centre, off Edinburgh Gardens, closed and the site will be used for flats.

Tina Bates, of Edinburgh Gardens, Braintree, said: "The fact they have taken the community centre away from us and they have not given us anything back is what grates."

A spokesman for Braintree Council said: "The community hall investment programme is putting money into premises which are well used and respected by local communities and where there is clear and enthusiastic demand for them, such as Rickstones and Spring Lodge in Witham, Goldingham and Glebe in Braintree and the Halstead senior citizens centre."
