The Metropolitan Police diving section found the body of Nelson Nubila in several feet of water in the River Chelmer only a few hundred metres from shops in Chelmsford's town centre.
The discovery was made at just before 11am yesterday.
Although formal identification will not take place until later today, police believe it to be the 23-year-old student who had been missing since the early hours of New Year's Day.
