A BLUEPRINT shaping the future of Southend Carnival could include changes to the annual procession and a male figurehead for the first time in its 100-year history.

A wide-ranging review of the annual event is to be revealed in the next few weeks - just months before the centenary carnival in August.

Carnival association chairman Mike Steptoe said the idea of having a carnival king as well as a carnival queen was again being considered. He said the association was also reviewing the whole route of the carnival procession, which attracts crowds of thousands.
