GRAYS defender, Stevland Angus, looks certain to leave the club after manager, Mark Stimson, questioned his commitment to the Blues' cause.

Angus, 23, was due to partner new-signing, Christian Hanson, in the heart of Grays' defence for Saturday's game against Kidderminster but pulled out at the last minute claiming he had injured his groin.

With Jamie Stuart and Ade Olayinka suspended and Lee Matthews injured this left Stimson with a real selection headache for the game, which he solved by playing 18-year-old right back Cameron Mawer alongside Hanson.

The gamble paid off as both Hanson and Mawer defended superbly to help Blues to a 1-0 win but the victory didn't temper Stimson's anger at Angus.

"He has thrown up a mystery groin injury and declared himself unfit," he said. "I don't know where he's got it from, I'd love to know and I have to question whether he wants to play for Grays Athletic."

Grays hope to make at least two more signings before next week's league game at York and to do so will need to release one or two players to balance the books.

Joe Bruce is one man tipped to leave and now it seems that Angus, who only joined the club in August, will also be shown the door.

Stimson said: "We've got some players who have shown they are not good enough. One of those has an injury, which I don't know where it came from. Those players will be shown the door and hopefully we will move on and get men into the team like Hanson."

One player who will not be joining Blues is Portsmouth defender, Gary Silk, who backed out of a move to the Conference side at the eleventh hour to join Boston United.

A disappointed Stimson added: "I thought we had it done late last Wednesday night but Thursday morning I got up and got the call from Portsmouth to say he had gone to Boston.

"I'm disappointed we've lost a player but I understand where he's coming from, he wants to join a league club.

"But there were two players who were involved in league football on Saturday and hopefully they will be joining us by Wednesday."
