A rescue team to deal with terrorist attacks and major incidents across the region is to be based in Colchester.
The urban search and rescue team (USAR) will be trained and equipped to deal with terrorist attacks, unstable and collapsed buildings, and major transport incidents across Essex and the eastern region.
USAR is being funded by the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister's New Dimension Programme, set up after the September 11 terrorist attacks in America in 2001.
Essex Fire and Rescue Service has applied for planning permission to set up the base for USAR at its current workshops in Lexden.
It will contain three vehicles and five container modules housing specialist equipment. There will also be a training rig. Nine people will be based there.
The compound will be surrounded by security fencing. It will also have an accommodation block.
USAR will carry out search and rescue operations, stabilise buildings and provide support for regional and national emergencies.
Mark James, operations manager at Essex Fire and Rescue Service, said: "The original concept followed the 9/11 terrorist attacks. Since then there have been a number of natural disasters, and USAR will increase our capability for any disaster.
"Lexden is seen as the preferred site as it will give better coverage for the bottom end of the East Anglian region."
