ESSEX schools dominated the English Schools Cross-Country Cup regional final at St Albans - again demonstrating the county's strength in depth.

Competing against teams from across the whole of the East of England, and with three teams qualifying from each of four races, 11 of the 12 teams going through were from Essex.

They now go on to the national final at Leeds on December 3.

The girls' events were dominated by the same three schools in both the junior and intermediate age groups.

In the junior girls event Coopers Coborn, from Upminster, won on 22 points from Southend High for Girls (62) and Brentwood Ursuline (78).

In the Intermediate event Coopers again came first with an impressive score of 17 points followed by Southend High (49) and Brentwood Ursuline (80) .

In both events Rayleigh's Fitzwimarc were unfortunate not to achieve qualification for the final, finishing in fourth place in both age groups.

In the boys' events Southend High and Fitzwimarc were equally impressive with the seasiders taking first place in both age groups with Fitz second.

In Yorkshire three of these teams will be defending the titles they won in 2004 - Southend High for Boys at junior level and Coopers Coborn girls at both junior and intermediate standard.
