AN investigation has been launched into why the first couple exposed to deadly bird flu in Britain were allowed to continue working at Southend Hospital for almost a week before receiving treatment.

It is thought the Government probe will in no way hold Southend Hospital or the Ashingdon couple responsible.

But it will look into why the hospital was not made aware of the potential risks to patients and colleagues for several days due to an alleged breakdown in communication between Government departments.
