THE prosecution and defence teams in the trial of Wayne Doherty, who is accused of raping and murdering Norah Trott 27 years ago, have delivered their closing speeches.
Martyn Levett, prosecuting, told the jury in Basildon Crown Court they had heard overwhelming evidence to convict Doherty, 50, of the charges.
In his final address, Michael Wolkind, defending, said jurors would be "gambling" and making a mistake if they found Doherty guilty of raping and murdering the 63-year-old Rochford woman on November 6, 1978.
Judge Philip Clegg is not expected to finish giving the jury directions on the law until later today.
The jury will then be sent out to consider their verdict.
