Tim and Neil Barbrook did not intend to raise any money when they planned to cycle from the northern tip of France to the southern end. But it occurred to them that they could make the trip a charitable one.

Neil's wife, Jane, works as a teacher at Lexden Springs School, Halstead Road, Colchester. This gave them the idea to donate the £2,202 they raised to the school.

Neil, 56, and Tim, a 26-year-old former Phillip Morant pupil, set off on their voyage in May. They spent nearly three weeks on their bikes as they covered more than 700 miles.

"I thought I was fit before we left but it was really hard work," Tim said.

"We saw a lot of signs being put up for the Tour De France and we got plenty of support from local people while we were travelling."

A spokesman for the school said it was extremely grateful for the money it had received.
