A policeman was in jail today for stabbing his former partner.

A court heard yesterday how Peter Marley could not accept his relationship with fellow officer Diane Frew was over.

There was a row in May at their home in Chiltern Close, Colchester, which ended with 28-year-old Miss Frew being stabbed in the arm by Marley.

Chelmsford Crown Court also heard how Miss Frew has been left traumatised by the attack and now fears men, and the police.

Marley, 34, was in tears as he was jailed for five years after he admitted wounding Miss Frew with intent to cause her grievous bodily harm. He also admitted a charge of criminal damage - throwing a brick through a window of Miss Frew's car.

The police constable with three years of service has resigned from the force.

Recorder John Akast told Marley: "She was utterly terrified. We have heard the awful screams on the tapes. If people still doubt what domestic violence sounds like, they ought to perhaps borrow the tapes and hear it."

Hugh Vass, prosecuting, said matters came to a head when Miss Frew made it clear to Marley the relationship was over. He said he would kill himself and there was another argument which ended with Marley stabbing Miss Frew in the arm with a seven-inch-long kitchen knife.

Alexandra Felix, mitigating, said Marley was depressed when Miss Frew ended their relationship. He remembered little of the incident as he had had a cocktail of drink and tablets in a bid to end his life. He was truly sorry over what had happened, she added.
