At its height, more than 60 firefighters dealt with the fire, in Severalls Hospital, Myland, Colchester, and smoke could be seen from miles around.
It is thought the blaze could have been started deliberately.
After the fire was reported at 10.12am yesterday, eight fire engines and two aerial ladder platforms were called to the site, where an area 200m by 100m was ablaze.
