The Harwich and Dovercourt Golf Club member was laid low with a bout of glandular fever in March.

The illness really knocked him for six, preventing him from competing in county competitions and his hopes of pushing for his first spot in the Essex first team.

But the 19-year-old returned from his sick bed and gradually got back to his best to earn his place in the county squad - and it was a chance he took with aplomb.

Burwood told the Gazette: "I couldn't do anything while I was ill, couldn't take part in county competitions and I couldn't even practise. And then, when I started playing again around May time, I wasn't playing to my full potential which was really frustrating but people were saying that it takes time to recover from glandalar fever and that it can keep in your system for a few months afterwards.

"It was disappointing because I'd wanted to get into the Essex first team, as I've worked my way up through all the other age groups, but being ill was holding me back.

"It all came good in the end though," Burwood added.
