Neighbours called firefighters at 11.30am on Saturday after they saw smoke and flames billowing out of an upstairs window in Paternoster Row, Walton.
Frinton fire station arrived with two crews soon afterwards, but due to the severity of the fire, Clacton sent two more crews.
Sub-officer Mark Oxley, of Frinton, said: "It was a severe fire in the front bedroom. It spread to the roof and it smokelogged all the terrace houses that shared the roof space."
The elderly woman and her son who lived in the house escaped the building before fire crews arrived. But firefighters rescued a dog that was trapped in another of the houses which was full of smoke.
