A DISTRAUGHT man flew home early from holiday last night after finding out his home had been hit by a fire which killed his two pet birds.
An electrical fault is believed to be responsible for yesterday's small blaze which left the detached house in Burnt Mills Road, Basildon, badly smoke damaged.
The owner, who lives alone, was on holiday in Tenerife, but headed home when he was contacted about the blaze.
Although there was little fire damage, smoke had filled and damaged the house by the time firefighters arrived.
