Aimee Lister, nine, and five-year-old Megan Wheeler both planted their sunflower seeds in their grandmother's Maldon garden earlier this year.
Their monster blooms both grew to 13ft 8ins tall and scooped them joint first prize in Maldon and Heybridge Horticultural Society's contest.
The girls' grandmother, Linda Lister, of Mill Road in Maldon, said there was no secret recipe for cultivating such huge flowers.
Aimee, of Fambridge Road, North Fambridge, and Megan, of The Street, Hatfield Peverel, won £10 and the Mrs Leslie Pinkham Trophy to share between them.
