Colchester United and Ipswich Town produced a proper local derby battle at Broad Lane.

It took only seven minutes for the first goal when Longhurst knocked the experienced Pleasence off the ball, ran at the defence and squared for Warnes to tap in for an early Colchester lead.

However, this stirred Ipswich into action and they dominated the rest of the half.

Kinsalla in the U's goal was kept busy, making one brave save at the feet of Emanuel and then cooly tipping over a free-kick from Peacock.

Ipswich were getting to the ball first and played some good flowing football with their forwards making intelligent runs and causing panic in the Colchester defence.

It was no surprise when the equaliser arrived in the 19th minute through Howlett.

Minutes later they took the lead, following a misplaced pass Bass was given the opportunity to score.

The U's stayed calm after the interval as tackles flew in from both teams.

Colchester were now winning the midfield battle and putting Ipswich under pressure as they stormed forward trying to retrieve something from the game.

Ipswich's Rex, Monaghan and Rolfe were all booked in a three-minute spell as the pressure told.

In the 71st minute, Guyon swung over a precision corner and Hultquist headed into the net to equalise.

Six minutes later, Longhurst lobbed the keeper to put them back in the lead.

However, following a mix up in the Colchester defence Culley equalised for Ipswich.

Six minutes into injury time Colchester were awarded a penalty.

Warnes' spot-kick was brilliantly saved but the rebound was headed in by Longhurst for victory.
