UP TO £50,000 of taxpayers' cash could help fund a £1million marketing campaign promoting Southend as a key tourist destination for the London Olympics in 2012.

Southend Council believes it can attract £1million of funding from various bodies to draft in a marketing agency to help highlight the town's appeal.

Director of leisure services, John Dallaway, will also ask cabinet councillors for a commitment position for the town as a tourist destination to benefit both Southend and the "wider London Olympic experience".

In a report to Tuesday's cabinet, Mr Dallaway said if the council would put £50,000 on the table, a promotional budget for the town of £1million working with other public bodies, regeneration agencies and the private sector could be achieved.
