Once again an Essex County final returned to the Chelmsford course on a very bright autumn day.

The resultant closely-fought match of see-saw results saw Colchester take the Shepherd Neame Trophy (Essex Seniors Team Trophy).

The first match between Brian Alton and John Honeyman was all square, while Dave Wright put Orsett in the lead when he won by one-up.

This was followed by convincing wins for Tim Rogers and Colin Anstey putting Colchester in the lead.

The next match was halved between Paul Nunny and Ray Legg then Jim Boyle and Dick Bokenham put Colchester further ahead.

In the last four matches Orsett fought back, winning three of them by the margin of four and three with victories going to Bob Page, John Harrison and John Cook.

The score was now five all. Mark Duley on the last match to finish the course brought in the decisive victory which gave the cup to Colchester.

The medals and the trophy were presented by David Townsend, the sales manager of Shepherd Neame, who have donated this trophy for the Seniors Team Knockout competition.

Over 80s golfers teed off for the Gilford Trophy held at Ballards Gore in which for the first time associate members were able to invite guests.

The trophy and prizes were presented by Chris Gilford, who is the nephew of the original donor of the trophy.

The winner was Dean Pithers (Bentley) playing off 11, scored 43 points. In second place was Steve Mace (Benton Hall) playing off 13 and scoring 40 points.

The Essex Match Play Championship for the Allan Lockwood Trophy has reached the semi-final stage.

The matches will be: Bernard Tucker (Langdon Hills) playing Perry Schuler (Toot Hill), Peter Duley (Colchester) playing Bill Preedy (Thorpe Hall).
