A £1 million mansion is being rented out for the princely sum of just £35-a-week in an astonishing attempt to prevent squatters moving in and trashing the place.

House-hunters can move into Lexden Grange for the knock-down rent, a fraction of the price of a grotty bedsit.

In return they will become live-in "guardians", protecting the landmark Edwardian building from squatters and vandals.

Six places are up for grabs in the cut-price property which used to be Colchester Council's plush planning headquarters.

It boasts timber beams, oak panelling, broad bay windows and tranquil gardens.

One estate agent said: "We haven't a clue how much you could normally rent it for. We've never had somewhere that size."

Security firm Camelot, which is spearheading the project, hopes to attract workers such as teachers and nurses to move in.
