A massive waste management centre may be coming to Rivenhall despite residents' fears.

The owner of Rivenhall Airfield, Gent Fairhead, is preparing to submit a planning proposal to build a 14-hectare waste plant to dispose of 250,000 tonnes of waste every year.

Acting agents Golder Associates have distributed an environmental assessment report to gauge feedback from local authorities and residents before submitting a planning application to Essex County Council.

The site on the south-eastern edge of Rivenhall Airfield between Bradwell, Silver End and Rivenhall, was selected in 2000 by Essex County Council, in its waste plan, as one of six locations in Essex which could house such a site.

But this caused concern as it could lead to incinerators on the land.

Gent Fairhead is proposing to build a centre which will use composting technology to treat waste and also a recycling facility, offices, workshops, parking, a local waste sorting centre and visitor centre.

If planning permission is granted, the company aims to win a contract with Essex County Council to collect the waste from the surrounding area.

Rivenhall Parish Council chairman, Bob Turner, said: "We have raised objections before when we heard rumours but this is looking like a definite application.

"It would be a devastating addition to our village and we will do all we can to fight it."

A spokesman for Essex County Council said: "This is not part of our Waste Strategy and has not been submitted jointly with us."
