DISCOUNT food giant Lidl is planning a new store on the Essex Ford car showroom at one of the busiest junctions on the A127 in Southend.

The company has applied to Southend Council to demolish the existing Essex Ford dealership at Kent Elms corner at the junction with Rayleigh Road, Eastwood.

Essex Ford is planning to move to a £5million car showroom on the new Cherry Orchard Way business park development, behind Western Approaches on the boundary of Eastwood and Rochford.

A planning application for the new development is under consideration by Rochford District Council.

German based Lidl has seen huge growth since it opened its first store in the United Kingdom in 1994 and currently has more than 380 across the country.

A Southend Council spokesman said the application would be considered later by its development control committee.
