And that included a visit to Chelmsford to sign copies of his new book Whicker's War.

Veteran traveller and journalist Alan Whicker has travelled the world for the past 50 years. During that time he made 300 episodes of Whicker's World and reported from all points of the globe.

More recently he has been seen on our television screens fronting an advert for a travel company.

But his latest book chronicles his return to the invasion beaches and battlefields of Italy during the Second World War and co-incides with his Channel 4 series of the same name.

Mr Whicker, 80, who was made a CBE this year, signed copies of his book at Ottakar's bookshop and chatted to those who queued for their signed copies.
