Traders in the town centre are spitting feathers about the woman, who spends half-an-hour throwing bread to the birds at Christmas Tree Island most mornings.

Pierre Oxley, portfolio holder for leisure and chairman of Clacton Chamber of Trade, wants to use an Asbo to stop her.

"She is out feeding the birds in Christmas Tree Island every morning with two bags full of bread," said Mr Oxley.

"It attracts rats and unwanted birds and it has to stop. I've spoken to her numerous times and she told me she is just feeding the birds, but she is feeding the rats as well. It's time she got an Asbo."

Mr Oxley said council officers have agreed to wait for her to arrive at Christmas Tree Island and get her details. They will explain that she faces legal action if she doesn't stop, he added.

A member of staff at Ben's Shop, a newsagent opposite Christmas Tree Island, said he would support an Asbo attempt.

The man, who did not want to be named, said traders have to put up with dirty pavements and ruined goods when the birds fly in.
