Magistrates have fined a German drink-driver almost £1,000 after he was found to be nearly twice the limit.

Appearing at Chelmsford Magistrates' Court yesterday, Jens Anderson, 47, admitted driving with excess alcohol on September 15 in Essex Regiment Way, Chelmsford.

Magistrates fined him £900 and ordered he pay £55 costs while disqualifying him from driving for 16 months.

Steve Butler, prosecuting, said: "At about 8.30pm police officers saw a black Toyota car being driven by the defendant and considered it to be speeding.

"When they stopped Anderson, they gave him a roadside breath test which was positive."

Anderson, of Jersey Gardens, Wickford, had 67mcg of alcohol in 100ml of breath. The legal limit is 35.

Anderson, who was not represented, said: "It was a stupid mistake, I should not have done it and will never do it again.

"I had just flown back to England from Germany and was not feeling very sharp and I did not realise I would be over the limit."
