School meals face lab tests from food inspectors in a bid to make sure children are eating healthily.

Trading standards chiefs want to run tests on school lunches to check what goes into food dished up to thousands of Essex pupils.

A county council spokesman said: "At the moment, it's still very much at the planning stage. It's something we have thought about in the past to make sure the food our schools are receiving is nutritious for the children."

"We will take samples of food and test them for vitamins."

Schools in Essex are responsible for providing lunches to children after Essex County Council pulled the plug on a centralised meals service last year.

Some have their own kitchen facilities while others buy in food from outside contractors.
