Arthur Hume and Richard Todd, both consultant orthopaedic surgeons for 25 years, cut the ribbon to open the new unit last night.
Hospital chiefs say the operating theatre will help cut waiting times for the growing number of elderly patients.
The hospital has been forced to send some patients to private hospitals in a bid to hit Government targets.
