BASILDON Council is to spend more than £56,000 on a housing expert to mastermind the offloading of its 13,000 council-owned homes.

The council is hoping to increase its chances of receiving Government funding by handing over management of its houses, flats, bedsits and sheltered accommodation units to an Arms Length Management (Almo) - an independently-run company set up by the council to manage its stock.

By doing so, the council will continue to own the stock, but the Almo will take over its management and maintenance.

Under Government housing guidelines, the best performing authorities can gain access to extra funds if they set up Almos.

To oversee the handover, the council is advertising for a new Almo project manager, who will be paid a fixed annual salary of £56,289.
