ANXIOUS residents and traders voiced their opposition to a multimillion pound redevelopment designed to change the face of Southend seafront forever.

Around 50 anxious homeowners, shopkeepers, pub landlords and restaurant owners packed into Ye Olde Chippy, in Marine Parade, Southend, last night to protest at the plans.

The restaurant is itself one of the many businesses threatened with closure should developer John Remblance's dream of building a 16-storey entertainment super-complex ever get off the ground.

The development, called Marine Plaza, will include a casino, hotel, new homes, bars and restaurants. If the scheme went ahead it would see the end for the rundown Dizzyland site and Happidrome arcade.

After Friday's deadline the plans will go to Southend Council's development control committee, on October 12 although the plans may not be discussed at that meeting.

No one from the developers or from Dedman Property Services, in Southchurch Road, which is acting as agents for them attended the public meeting.
