A pub's bid to extend its hours has been lost after it failed to advertise its intentions.

The Rose and Crown pub on The Quay, Wivenhoe, had applied to sell alcohol until midnight from Sunday to Wednesday and until 1am from Thursday to Saturday. The pub would have opened at 9am every day.

A spokesman for the licensing committee of Colchester Council said when the application was heard on Friday that the pub was only granted "grandfather rights" as no advertisement had been placed in a newspaper.

A spokesman from the Sprit Group, which operates the pub, said there had been an administrative error which meant no advert was placed. She said they would be advertising soon and re-submitting the application.
