Liam Chilvers will be happy with more 1-0 wins if it sets Colchester United on their way up the table.

The U's centre-back put in a man-of-the-match performance as Colchester defended Chris Iwelumo's goal at Port Vale to walk away with three points in Coca-Cola League One.

He said: "It was a classic away performance.

"We poached a goal and it was then a matter of defending that to get the three points.

"It's our third game without defeat and our second win on the trot, so we're in good form and it's great to come to these places and get the wins.

"Ideally you want to win at home and draw away to get towards promotion, so this win was a big result."

It was a hard-fought victory for the U's at Port Vale as manager Phil Parkinson was again forced to field players who were not 100 per cent fit, this time Chilvers.

"I'm not fully up and running," said Chilvers. "I had a problem with the medial ligaments in my knee, but Pat Baldwin injured himself in training on Thursday so that put him out of contention.

"If Pat had been fully fit he would have started."
