MARLON Harewood's attacking display might have caught the eye as West Ham beat Fulham 2-1 on Saturday.

But it was goalkeeper Roy Carroll who had manager Alan Pardew excited about his contribution.

Carroll made three crucial saves while the scores were level, underlining the importance of Pardew's dash to sign the former Manchester United shotstopper.

"I think Roy has come here wanting to prove a point and that's why I made him my first signing," said Pardew.

"I had my eye on him for a while and after we won in Cardiff I went straight out to Spain to secure him - and he's been delivering for us.

"On Saturday we could have been one or two goals down - we had to call on our keeper and he did brilliantly."

Carroll left Old Trafford under something of a cloud, with the abiding memory of his spell being his lucky escape after fumbling a long ball into his own net in a match against Spurs.

Unable to agree a new contract with Alex Ferguson, he moved on to Upton Park.

"If you look at his record for Manchester United it's really outstanding," added Pardew. "Look at the games he played and the clean sheets he kept."
