Firefighters were called to two arson attacks over the weekend.
In the first, a caravan was set on fire at about 12.30am on Saturday in Bluemills Road, Woodham Walter, near Maldon. Crews arrived to find the caravan "well alight".
The fire was put out and police were called to close the road until the charcoaled remains of the caravan were removed.
Martin Cable, station officer at Maldon fire station said: "It looked as though the caravan had been pulled from a nearby travellers site, into the road and then set alight. It is being treated as suspicious."
Just a few hours later, a wheelie bin outside Chelmsford's Anglia Polytechnic University, in Ransomes Road, was set alight by arsonists at about 4.15am on Saturday.
